Auditions for Lucy

We held some auditions for Lucy in one of the studios in Electric Press. Lucy is the main character in the film so we really wanted to get her cast as soon as possible.

We invited several actresses, but not all of them replied or could attend. We ended up with two actresses auditioning for the part.

Megan, from the YAFTA class that we sat in on, also came to audition. She caught our eye during their session. She has the right look for the film - quite an innocent face and a worried expression.

Hannah Waring, also auditioned, an actress that Connor found online via Spotlight.

She has some experience, and has worked with the film school before so we felt confident in her abilities. She also has the right look for the character. She has a playing age of around eighteen, and we felt that she looked like she could be a believable victim, we could see her being a bit vulnerable in some situations.

Megan's audition was good, and we were impressed by her communication of emotion physically through her facial expressions and body language, which is just what we were looking for with a film that doesn't have a lot of lines. However, although we were told by the class teacher that she is eighteen, she is actually seventeen. As such we felt that it would be morally dubious to involve a minor in a film about sexual harassment, and that there would be too much paperwork and limitations involved due to laws surrounding actors under eighteen.

Hannah's audition was better. She was a little more subtle, which is better for screen. Hannah is also more believable as a university student than Megan, as she is the right age and you can see it in her face. She is more confident in her stance and portrays the part of a very normal, confident, happy girl who has a bad thing happen to her - rather than a girl with anxiety problems who the audience would struggle to believe - which is exactly what we discussed avoiding in the meetings. As such, we believe her to be the obvious choice.
